It’s great to have big goals and dreams, but they can sometimes steal from the present. There is no room for anything but THE MISSION. The world tarnishes. You begin to feel impoverished.
I try to distance myself from my hopes and dreams. I tell myself they’re silly. I bury them ten feet deep. I throw them out of a moving car and don’t wait to see where they land or if they manage to tuck and roll. I flee when they make themselves known.
“Dream big” and “work hard” are phrases often fed to kids. Kids are told if they work hard enough that their dreams will come true. They will find Mr. or Mrs. Right. They will get the dream job with the cushy salary. They’ll live the American dream.
