Write Right: Advice and Advise

December 4, 2013 By Erin Beasley

Write Right Talks about Writing RightAdvice and advise sometimes are mistaken for each other. It’s no surprise. The two words only vary by one letter. They are, however, distinct from each other in every possible way.

Advise is a verb. One can advise a person, such as in the case of Jafar. He advised the sultan. Was he a good advisor? No, but advise he did.

Advice is a noun. It it what Jafar gave the sultan. It may have been duplicitous advice, but it was advice.

Perhaps the real lesson of this post is to be careful when accepting advice or looking for one who can advise. Hint: If the person carries a serpent staff, it’s probably best to avoid him or her.
