Has Anyone Ever Told You to “Find Your Voice”?

January 31, 2013 By Erin Beasley

Today’s post is by Jim Dougherty.

Breathe deep and speak up.Has anyone ever told you to “find your voice“? It’s a curious bit of opaque advice that people like to share, but what does it really mean? Does it mean that you should write about the things that interest you? Does it mean you should become an indignant, uncompromising (underappreciated) artist? Does it mean you should find a voice that someone else wants you to have?

Why You Need to Keep a Notebook

January 30, 2013 By Erin Beasley

Mike Rohde's Custom Moleskine Planner.I am the keeper of many notebooks. I have one that stays in my purse. It isn’t a Moleskine, but it does the trick. I have notebooks beside my laptop. I have another in my living room, and it’s reserved for poetry. I then usually have one or two on my nightstand; I never know when an idea might visit, and I’ll need to record it.

Consequences of Reaching the Next Level

January 23, 2013 By Erin Beasley

Doing the scary thing makes it easier to do other scary things.Even though rock climbing scares me, I want to go back. I reached the next level, and I want to push myself more. I want to see if I can climb one of the other walls. It’s a consequence of reaching the next level. I get a rush of exhilaration whenever I accomplish something I thought I couldn’t.

How to Push Yourself to the Next Level

January 22, 2013 By Erin Beasley

Moving to the next level requires thought and action.A few weeks ago, I went rock climbing. It’s an interesting choice because I have a slight fear of heights. I don’t volunteer to climb ladders. I don’t get excited by the idea of skydiving. No, I like to keep my feet on the ground.
